A £650m plan to revamp the heart of Salford has been outlined. More than 800 homes, two hotels, shops, offices and a new square are included in the scheme, which would cover 17 hectares - or 21 football pitches. Urban regeneration company Central Salford said its proposals were designed to revitalise the city centre for residents and businesses. Chief executive Chris Farrow said he was confident investors could be found, despite the recession. Historic cathedral "The vision is to regenerate this important area of the city to help diversify its economic base and bring in new activity," said Mr Farrow. "We want to create a vibrant urban centre with striking economic opportunity borne out of the city's fine heritage which will showcase its many historical and natural assets. "Alongside this we will be providing a mix of quality family homes and apartments and attracting new businesses, whilst retaining and building on the creative industries that are already established." Areas and landmarks of the city due to be redeveloped include Salford Central Station, Chapel Street, Bexley Square and Adelphi Square. The area around listed buildings such as St Philips Church and Salford Cathedral will also be revamped. A new square, called St Johns Place, is planned to maximise the view of the city's newly-renovated historic cathedral. The plans - said to be the biggest application ever submitted to Salford City Council - were being sent to the authority on Monday.
