Council opposes racecourse plan

Plans were first unveiled in 2001

Plans to build a new racecourse on greenbelt land in Salford have been opposed by city planners.

Peel Holdings is behind the �100m Salford Forest Park scheme to build a racecourse, stadium and golf course on greenbelt land near Boothstown.

Opponents say the development will cause huge traffic problems and pollution in the area.

Salford City Councillors formally rejected the plans at a meeting at Salford Civic Centre.

Peel Holdings are expected to go to a public inquiry next year.

The plans include a floodlit oval racetrack with a 6,000 capacity grandstand, a four-star hotel and an 18-hole golf course.

The last time horse racing took place in Greater Manchester was in 1963 at the former Castle Irwell Racecourse in Lower Broughton.

The site is now used as student halls of residence by The University of Salford.
