Millionaire leaves cash to school

The donation will fund an extra 20 places each year

A millionaire has left almost his entire fortune to his former school in Manchester.

Dr Peter Bracewell, who died last year leaving an estate valued at more than �3m, named Manchester Grammar as the main beneficiary of his will.

He was a pupil there in the 1930s before working as a GP in Wythenshawe and retiring to the Lake District.

The money will help low-income families send their children to the �9,000 a year school in Fallowfield.

Antique clocks

Dr Bracewell never married or had children and his sister, Dame Joyanne Bracewell, also died last year.

His fortune is made up of antique clocks, crockery and silverware which are to be sold at auction.

Manchester Grammar is a fee-paying school which was founded in 1515 for poor boys who showed academic abilities.

The donation will provide enough interest to fund an extra 20 places each year.

A spokesman for the school said Dr Bracewell had requested information about how to make a bequest some years ago, but they were not expecting such a generous donation.
