Labour held control in Manchester

The Conservatives are celebrating in Greater Manchester after having gained control of Bury.

The Tories needed three seats to take over in an area where there was no overall control, and they gained all three from the Labour Party.

Labour held control in Manchester, Wigan, Salford and Tameside and the Lib Dems held on in Stockport and Rochdale.

Labour lost in Oldham, leaving it a hung council with the Liberal Democrats the biggest party.

They took four seats from Labour.

C-charge

In Salford, Roger Jones, a champion of congestion charging for Greater Manchester and the chairman of the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority (GMPTA), lost his Irlam seat.

Mr Jones was one of the leading proponents for the controversial �5-a-day fee to drive in and out of Manchester city centre.

He was beaten by the Community Action Party, who won 1,152 votes to Mr Jones' 650.

In Bolton, the Liberal Democrats lost one seat to Labour and one to the Conservatives, meaning the council remained in no overall control.

The Tories remain in control of Trafford Council, where they gained one seat from Labour.

But the party still only has one seat on Manchester City Council, having failed to make gains this year.

In January, Faraz Bhatti defected from the Liberal Democrats to secure the Tories their first seat on the council for more than a decade.
