Developers Pochin had shortlisted the village of Wardle, near Nantwich, as a possible site for the 7,000-home town.

But residents claimed they knew nothing of the plans and Stephen O'Brien, Conservative MP for Eddisbury, said the scheme caused "deep concern".

Pochin say that they have now written to government to withdraw their planning application.

The company said that there would have been an opportunity for full local consultation had the Wardle site been shortlisted by ministers.

Pochin's plans have been ditched now that "strong local opposition" has been made clear.

'Unnecessary burden'

The scheme was one of dozens submitted to the government as it aims to create up to 10 eco-towns across the country.

Residents said plans were "ill-conceived" and would present major environmental issues to the rural community.

It was claimed the town would bring an extra 17,000 people and 10,000 vehicles into the area, placing an unnecessary burden on local infrastructure.

A march was also planned in protest at the development.
