Residents can check Asbos for their area |
People with Anti Social Behaviour Orders (Asbos) are being "named and shamed" to encourage residents report any breaches. An internet site has been set up showing residents of Bury, Greater Manchester, who have an Asbo.
BurySafe, a partnership which includes the council, police and courts service, is behind the site.
A man with an Asbo was arrested after shopping centre CCTV operators recognised him from the website.
He was breaching his order by drinking in public.
Of more than 60 Asbos in Bury, only a handful appear on the list because offenders may have moved from the area, or their order covers only a small area.
Maps show exclusion areas for those with Asbos |
Maps also show users where the offenders are banned from.
Tony Holt, head of community safety, said: "I understand that it may cause some controversy but let us be clear about the reason these people have been given these orders.
"They have caused their victims great suffering or subjected them to unacceptable behaviour.
"Much is said about the effectiveness of Asbos and all we are trying to do is to ensure that they are the deterrent they are designed to be in appropriate cases."
The site also shows pictures of those with Asbos, alongside the terms of their order.
Councillor Michelle Wiseman said: "Bury has the lowest crime rates in Greater Manchester and with good reason.
"It is about time that these people were 'named and shamed' and that the residents of Bury are able to live without fear of intimidation."
