 Amir Khan denies dangerous driving |
The jury in the dangerous driving trial of boxer Amir Khan has retired to consider its verdict. The world lightweight title hopeful went through a red light in Bolton and knocked down a man on a pelican crossing, Bolton Crown Court has heard.
Under cross-examination, Khan, 20, admitted his driving was careless but he refused to accept it was dangerous.
Geoffrey Hatton, 55, suffered a broken leg when he was hit by Mr Khan's BMW 6 series car on 2 March.
The foundry worker said he "panicked" in the middle of the crossing and ran back towards the kerb for safety, but instead went into the path of the oncoming car.
Jurors have heard his high-performance BMW 6 series car reached 47mph as he overtook vehicles in the wrong lane just before traffic lights in Bolton town centre.
The incident was captured on CCTV and the footage shown to the jury.
Mr Hatton told the court he had thought it was safe to cross and that he had not been aware of any oncoming traffic.
The court was told that Mr Khan, of Lostock, near Bolton, remained at the scene and was arrested and interviewed by police three months later, when he made no comment.
