Fans on both sides were injured when Man Utd last played Roma |
Police patrols are to be stepped up for Manchester United's Championship League tie against AS Roma following violent clashes the last two times they met. During April's game in Italy both sets of fans were seen throwing missiles at each other which led to 11 Manchester United fans being taken to hospital.
Manchester police have been working with their Italian counterparts to help prevent trouble at Tuesday's match.
The two forces have been gathering data on potential trouble-makers.
Match Commander, Superintendent John Graves, said: "The majority of people who will be at Old Trafford are genuine football fans who just want to have a good night and cheer on their team.
Zero tolerance
"However, given the scenes in Rome when United last played there, and the disorder we had to deal with when Roma played at Old Trafford, we want to make sure anybody thinking of travelling to the game understands that we will not tolerate violence at this match.
"We have been working with colleagues in Rome to build up intelligence about any known trouble-makers who may travel to Manchester, and we have officers dedicated to gathering the same type of information about potential trouble-makers from the UK."
Spotters will be at Manchester Airport, as well as in the stadium, and police are warning that anyone who tries to come to the ground who is already subject to a football banning order will be arrested.
Uniformed officers will be joined by the Mounted Unit, Tactical Aid Unit, City Centre Safe Team, Dog and Traffic sections and covert officers to police the match and surrounding areas.
Greater Manchester Police are also advising fans to leave plenty of time to get to the ground and asking anybody who does not have a ticket for the game, not to travel to the ground, as tickets will not be on sale at the turnstiles.
