Jordon Lyon was pulled from the John Pit Pond at Standish Lower Ground on Wednesday afternoon, following reports a boy had been seen in the water.

Members of the public helped rescue Jordon, who was not breathing.

Officers performed resuscitation and he was taken by air ambulance to Royal Manchester Children's Hospital, Pendlebury, but died on Friday morning.

It is thought Jordon may have gone into the water to help a girl who was in difficulty after swimming in the hot weather.

School 'devastated'

A Greater Manchester Police spokeswoman said: "Officers arrived at the scene to find members of the public were in the process of rescuing the boy.

"He was not conscious or breathing, so police officers performed CPR on him."

The North West air ambulance flew to Preston Royal Infirmary, before the boy was transferred to Pendlebury.

Police said his condition deteriorated and he died in the early hours.

There are not thought to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident.

The boy was a Year Six pupil at Beech Hill Primary School in Wigan.

Head teacher Janet Seddon said the whole school was "devastated" by the death.

She said: "Children, parents and staff are naturally very upset and struggling to come to terms with the situation.

"The news was broken to the children during a very sad and subdued assembly this morning.

"Our thoughts and sympathy go out to the family at this very difficult and heartbreaking time."
