The Bury to Altrincham line will be closed for seven weeks |
Tram passengers face disruption as line closures have been announced for engineering work over the summer. Parts of the line between Bury and Altrincham will be closed from the end of July for seven weeks. Other sections of the line will be also be closed.
The work is part of a 100m refurbishment of the tram system, which includes replacing nearly 20 miles of worn out track.
Replacement bus services will be in operation over the period.
Various parts of the Bury to Altrincham line will close between the end of May and mid-September, but the line will be completely closed between Bury and Manchester Victoria for seven weeks from 23 July.
The section of track between Altrincham and Cornbrook will also be closed for a month from 27 July.
Services on the Eccles line should not be affected by the work
September finish
A spokesperson from Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive (GMPTE) said the work was necessary as some of the track was more than 50 years old.
It was being used by trains before the tram service started in 1992.
David Leather, interim chief executive of GMPTE, said: "We decided to carry out the work during the summer months as fewer people will be using Metrolink.
"I hope passengers will bear with us until it's finished as the trams will be much smoother and more reliable when the lines reopen."
All the work is expected to be finished by mid-September.
