Anthony Wilson was an influential figure in the "Madchester" scene

The writer and broadcaster, 56, famous for setting up the Hacienda nightclub and Factory Records, went to the doctor after he felt ill for several months.

He was told his kidney was badly damaged and could not be saved, and it was removed at the Manchester Royal Infirmary on 3 January.

Wilson currently presents a programme on BBC Radio Manchester.

He also presents a music show on Xfm Manchester and another on local television station Channel M.

He has been involved with bands including Joy Division, New Order, A Certain Ratio and Happy Mondays and went on to set up the annual In The City music conference.

Comedian Steve Coogan played him in a film based on his life, 24 Hour Party People.

Mr Wilson said: "I spent November and December working very hard and thinking I had flu.

"Eventually my partner, Yvette Livesey, forced me to go to the doctor, who spotted the problem and sent me to hospital.

"The staff here have all been wonderful. I am feeling much better and hope to be released in about a week.
