Canal boat users stage blockades
Manchester's Bridgewater Canal
Blockades are planned in Manchester and Chester
Canal boat users have staged blockades in north-west England in protest over cuts to the government grant given to British Waterways.

Protesters gathered on the Bridgewater Canal in Castlefield, Manchester, and at Cow Lane Bridge in Chester.

The protests come after the Department of Environment Food and Rural Affairs. (Defra) cut its funding by 7m.

It said the British Waterways grant had to be reduced after an overspend amid bird flu fears and new farm subsidies.

Members of campaign group Save Our Waterways (SOW) are staging protests across England on Saturday.

Union leaders are also meeting Labour MPs as part of plans to lobby parliament against the cuts.
