Eight vehicle crash closes road
A major route into Manchester was closed after a road accident involving up to eight vehicles.

Two people were taken to hospital after the accident on the A556 Chester Road at Bucklow Hill, Knutsford, Cheshire, in the early hours.

Police closed the "extremely busy" road between junction 19 of the M6 and the Swan traffic lights for two hours.

Traffic heading towards Manchester was being diverted off the M6 and motorists were advised to avoid the area.

Driver trapped

Cheshire Constabulary said one lorry, three vans, three cars and a people carrier were involved in the smash at about 0636 GMT.

Two people were taken by ambulance to Wythenshawe Hospital, though their injuries are not thought to be serious.

A police spokeswoman said the lorry driver was cut free from his cab by firefighters but was not thought to be hurt.

The road was re-opened at about 0900 GMT.
