Families unite in Jessie appeal
Jessie James

Two grieving mothers have come together to call for the Moss Side community to help identify the killer of teenage shooting victim Jessie James.

It comes after a man was convicted of killing Ramone Cumberbatch, 18, when vital witnesses came forward.

On Thursday, his mother Beverley Knot said she now wanted the same justice for Jessie's mother, Barbara Reid.

Sitting alongside Mrs Reid, Ms Knott called for members of the community to come forward with information.

Information from witnesses played a vital part in tracing the killer of Mr Cumberbatch, Greater Manchester Police said.

The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was found guilty of murder on Wednesday after anonymous court testimony.

Both the Cumberbatch family and Mrs Reid said they hoped this would give witnesses to Jessie's murder the confidence they needed to come forward.

Mrs Reid said: "Beverley has gone through the same hell as I'm going through and has got justice. I want the same result for Jessie.

"People of Moss Side it is time to search your consciences and talk.

"I'm distraught. I'm hurting that my community will stand by and are doing nothing. It seems as though they enjoy the blood."

Jessie, a pupil at the Manchester Academy, was shot three times with a semi-automatic handgun in Raby Street, Moss Side, in September.

Several witnesses to the murder have yet to come forward, including three teenage girls who were standing near the West Indian Sports and Social Club at the time of the killing.

Det Supt Tony Cook, leading the Jessie James investigation, said the court result on Wednesday showed what could happen when people take a stand.

"This shows that the actions of a few people are all it takes to convict these dangerous individuals.

"The more people we are able to convict, the less likely it will be that more young people like Jessie and Ramone will have their lives cut short.

"It's all too easy to think that individuals can't make a difference and that the people responsible for gun crime get away with it but the only way this will happen is if the community refuse to stand up to them."

Witnesses thanked

Last week in a BBC interview, a woman who gave crucial evidence about a gangland murder urged witnesses to Jessie's killing to come forward.

The woman, who is now in a witness protection scheme, said she decided to speak out because she was "angry" at the violence.

Ramone Cumberbatch's mother said: "Justice is there for our community and we must fight to make our community safe again - the way it used to be before guns and gangs.

"Brave people must help us to do this like the witnesses in this case.

"Our family can never thank these people enough but the whole of Moss Side owes them too."
