A train station in Greater Manchester is to receive a multi-million pound facelift with improved security measures and a glamorous new look. Work on Salford Central, to begin before Christmas, will include CCTV, a new glazed entrance and ticket office, shops and other improved facilities.
Disabled access will also be upgraded as part of the 5m revamp.
Over the past few years the area around Salford Central has received more than 100m for regeneration.
 | I hope the improvements will encourage more people to use public transport |
This latest initiative, which should be completed by winter 2007, is being financed by Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority and the European Regional Development Fund.
Councillor Roger Jones, Chair of GMPTE, said: "Salford Central was a hugely important station when it was built and we want to revitalise it for the 21st century.
"I want Salford Central station to be at the heart of the regeneration in this part of the city."
The revamp will also see a new public address system and customer information screens installed and taxi and bus facilities will also be upgraded.
Councillor Barry Warner, GMPTE added: "Salford Central is on the edge of two cities and provides a vital link into both their centres.
"I hope the improvements will encourage more people to use public transport and take advantage of Salford Central."
