Maternity services at Fairfield are under threat

The news comes after a campaign to save maternity units at Bury's Fairfield Hospital and Rochdale Infirmary, which were threatened with closure.

The proposals are in a report put together after 55,000 people responded to a survey on health care.

However if departments in Bury and Rochdale stay open, North Manchester General's unit may have to close.

Ideas delivered

Respondents rejected four proposed options on maternity changes, instead making their own suggestions for what should happen in their area.

These suggestions include keeping the Bury and Rochdale units open.

It was also suggested that Wythenshawe Hospital be turned into a maternity "super-site".

Leila Williams, director of the report, called Making It Better, said: "We are really pleased because we specifically asked respondents to suggest ideas for the way services could be delivered.

"They effectively helped us to identify five alternative plans for the way we could deliver some of these services in the future."
