Hooligans have been warned not to travel |
Football hooligans planning to travel to England's match with Argentina in Geneva, Switzerland have been urged to think again by police. Starting on Thursday, Operation Detergent will target known or potential trouble makers planning to fly from Manchester Airport.
The operation will last until the match finishes on Saturday.
Ch Insp Martin Gaffney said the force's message to potential hooligans was "don't waste your time."
"Plain clothes officers will be working to spot known trouble makers and uniformed officers will be providing a high-visibility present at the airport, talking to fans and monitoring the situation," he said.
"In past operations of this kind, the vast majority of people approached by officers were genuine supporters who were co-operative and understanding, but we have been successful in stopping a number of known hooligans travelling."
