The development received a silver standard award |
A medieval-style hamlet in Warrington has is one of eight housing developments to be honoured in national building awards. The Butts Green development, by Bellway Homes, Manchester, has received the Building For Life Silver Standard.
The award is backed by the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (Cabe), the government and the housing industry.
It has been praised for the way it is screened from the M62 motorway.
The judges praised the way the builders and architect John Wilson Associates dealt with the "potentially problematic site".
'Attractive porches'
They commented especially on the way a medieval-style wall of apartments shielded the rest of the development from the sound of cars.
"This enables the rest of the development to be presented as a medieval hamlet, with terrace cottages and townhouses overlooking a green, peppered with barn conversion style cottages," the judges said.
The architects had paid extraordinary attention to detail, they continued, particularly the brick-work around arches or on the almshouses with "attractive porches and gates."
