Residents campaigning over plans to build a housing estate on the site of a former asbestos factory have been told safety tests will be carried out. Developers MMC Estates want to build 650 houses at the site of the former Turner Newall plant at Spodden Valley, Rochdale, Greater Manchester.
Council leader Paul Rowen met nearly 300 residents at a meeting on Tuesday.
The residents fear any building work could disturb asbestos fibres which could be left in the land.
MMC Estates and partners Countryside Properties have submitted a planning application for the site.
They assured the campaign group they will carry out independent safety tests before starting work.
