Canal celebrates 200th birthday
Rochdale Canal celebrates is 200th anniversary on Tuesday after a year-long series of events.

At its peak, the first Trans-Pennine waterway carried 686,000 tonnes of cargo per day and cost approximately 600,000 when it opened in 1804.

The last cargo-carrying boat used the 33 mile long route in 1937. It was abandoned in 1952 but reopened in 2002.

The Rochdale Canal Society is marking the event with a bicentenary lunch on the summit, 600ft above sea level.

'Fascinating history

Fiona Welch, from British Waterways said; "British waterways are proud to celebrate the 200th birthday of the canal.

"We hope the events throughout the year have highlighted the environmental and leisure opportunities the restored canal provides."

Paul Rowen from Rochdale Metropolitan Council said: "In celebrating the anniversary, we have not only been looking back to a fascinating history, but also forward to a prosperous and exciting future.

"The reopening of the canal presents a great opportunity for redeveloping along its length.

"A thriving canal will encourage tourism, leisure and sports activities, signs of this are already apparent."

Volunteers took responsibility for the upkeep of the canal after it was abandoned in 1952.

In 2002 British Waterways carried out restoration work enabling boats to once again cross the Pennines
