Rapist pretended to be cab driver
A rapist who posed as a taxi driver to trap his victim in Greater Manchester has been jailed for six years.

Ion Munteanu, of Turnpike Lane, Hornsey, London, picked her up near a Rochdale club last November, Minshull Crown Court in Manchester was told.

The 23-year-old victim was left with 40 injuries after the attack on remote moorland above the town.

Munteanu, 20, denied rape, but was convicted unanimously by a jury and placed on the sex offenders' register.

Instructions ignored

The court heard Romanian-born Munteanu was on his first night off from work as a car-park attendant in Halifax when he drove to Rochdale on the night of the attack.

He pulled up alongside his victim offering her a lift.

She got in, believing it was a genuine taxi, and gave directions to her boyfriend's house in Littleborough.

But Munteanu ignored her instruction and drove her to Blackstone Edge where he pulled into a lay-by and raped her.

Phone calls

During the journey the woman rang her boyfriend on her mobile phone.

He heard her panicking, saying "You've gone too far", "Turn round", and "Stop the car", before the phone went dead.

The court heard she also rang and texted her ex-boyfriend telling him she was being raped.

He tried to ring her back but could not get through so he rang 999.

The woman was later found by a passing motorist, barefoot, curled up and freezing on a grass verge.

Passing sentence Judge Jonathan Geake said it must have been an "extremely alarming and a very frightening experience" for the woman.

He said Munteanu had hit her several times in the face and pulled her hair so hard her ear-rings came off.
