A man has been found hanged in his cell at a Manchester prison on the day before his 30th birthday. Andrew Williams was found by staff at HMP Manchester, formerly known as Strangeways, at 0707 BST on Monday, a Home Office spokesman said.
Mr Williams, who was from Sale, Greater Manchester, had been convicted of theft and was awaiting sentence.
The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman is to investigate the death and the police and coroner have been informed.
Mr Williams was in a shared cell and was not on suicide watch at the time of his death, it has been revealed.
