Woman found dead in prison cell
HMP Buckley Hall
Staff at Buckley Hall tried to revive Ms Smith in her cell
A prison service inquiry has begun into the death of a woman who was found unconscious in her cell by guards.

Rebecca Smith, 40, was found at HMP Buckley Hall in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, at about 1600 BST on Tuesday, the Home Office confirmed.

Staff tried to revive her but she was pronounced dead at Rochdale Infirmary just after 1700 BST. The coroner has been informed.

Ms Smith was convicted of arson with intent at Bristol Crown Court in 2003.

The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman is investigating.

"Every death in custody is tragic and we offer our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Rebecca Smith," a Home Office spokesman said.
