Urbis, Manchester's controversial "museum of the modern city" has seen a 550% increase in visitors since scrapping its admission fee. More than 50,000 people have visited since January. The �5 fee was dropped because Urbis was failing to attract enough visitors.
The museum has been a controversial landmark in Manchester.
The city council subsidises it to the tune of �1.5m each year, which angers many Manchester residents.
'Positive response'
They feel the cash should be used for services which people want to use.
But in a statement, Urbis' management said: "We are delighted that the last three months have been incredibly busy for us and the public's response to Urbis has been wholeheartedly positive.
"We have no illusions that there is still a long way to go, but as the world's only cultural institution exploring the city, Urbis has a huge repertoire to draw on.
"We will keep endeavouring to excite and enrich our visitors with the exhibitions that we bring to Manchester."
