Fly tipper to pay thousands
Patrick Mallon getting into his lorry
Patrick Mallon's every move was being watched
A businessman who illegally tipped rubbish near Manchester city centre has been fined almost 7,000.

Patrick Mallon, who runs a rubbish removal firm, admitted five offences of fly tipping when he faced Manchester City Magistrates.

He was caught on CCTV as part of a drive by the city council, which has just bought 32 extra cameras to stop the practice which is widespread.

Magistrates said Mallon's punishment should act as a warning to others.

Patrick Mallon, who owns the Rubbish and Rubble removal company, was caught by the council's mobile CCTV unit.

A 'stupid mistake'

It followed him to various sites and filmed him illegally dumping his rubbish.

The court was told that he tried to escape justice by covering the name on the lorry he used.

But suspicious council officials trapped him by sifting through the dumped rubbish for evidence linking it to Mallon.

At Manchester Magistrates' Court he admitted five offences of fly tipping.

He was fined 2,500 and ordered to pay costs of almost 4,500.

His solicitor said he was a man of previous good character who was now utterly distraught and ashamed after making a stupid mistake.
