The centre aims to help eradicate breast cancer
The prime minister's wife Cherie Blair is supporting plans to build Europe's first purpose-built breast cancer prevention unit in Manchester.

The "Genesis Appeal", of which Mrs Blair has become a patron, aims to create a future without breast cancer.

It aims to build the 10m unit on the site of Wythenshawe Hospital.

Researchers would examine the faulty hereditary genes that can lead to multiple cases of the disease within individual families.

Specialists will also provide advice for women either directly affected or worried about contracting breast cancer.

This is a crucial development in attempts to ensure those affected by breast cancer is reduced from one-in-ten to none-in-ten
Lester Barr, Genesis chairman
Mrs Blair said: "The advent of Europe's first breast cancer prevention centre in Manchester is a momentous development for the city, the UK and the entire world community.

"The Genesis Appeal aims to create a future without breast cancer.

"I genuinely believe that through sustained effort and support this dream can become a reality."

Genesis is trying to raise the 2m costs of constructing the centre.

The NHS has already committed its support to the project and to the task of finding the facility's running costs.

Genesis chairman, Lester Barr, said: "The fact that [Mrs Blair] and others are backing our efforts means a great deal.

"This is a crucial development in attempts to ensure that the ratio of those affected by breast cancer is reduced from one-in-ten to none-in-ten."
