'A local lad whose future was snatched away from him' |
Police investigating the murder of a 19-year-old man in Moss Side have appealed to the local community to help catch the killer. Justin Maynard died in hospital from a single bullet wound after being shot on Tugford Close on Tuesday.
A few hours after Justin was shot, a second shooting took place in Princess Road in Moss Side where a 20-year-old man was injured in the foot.
Superintendent Neil Wain of Greater Manchester Police said the two shootings were not being linked, but police patrols would be increased in Moss Side and warned some residents would be stopped and searched.
"We hope that this will act as a deterrent to prevent any further incidents," he said.
"As part of these patrols officers will be using stop and search checks.
"We know that these tactics are not popular with the residents but they are essential if we are to remove the dangerous items and offensive weapons that we know that these criminals carry.
"They do not deserve your respect." He added a letter was being sent to residents to explain why stop and search will be carried out.
A murder incident room has been set up at Longsight police station where officers are trying to establish exactly what led to Justin's murder and obtain clear descriptions of those responsible.
Detective Superintendent Vincent Petrykowski who is leading the investigation into Justin's death said: "Justin was a local lad whose future was snatched away from him on Tuesday night and we need help from his friends and neighbours to catch those responsible for ending his young life.
"It's too early to say why Justin was murdered and we may never fully know the motive until we catch the individuals who killed him.
"However, what we do know is that his death has left a family completely devastated and we want to help them rebuild their lives by putting their son and brother's killer behind bars."
