Event tackles cancer taboo
The Christie Hospital
The Christie Hospital is one of Europe's top cancer centres
Models in bikinis and cancer patients were helping promote the first gynaecological cancer awareness week in Manchester on Monday.

The event, at the Christie Hospital, aims to break the taboo of cancers including cervical, ovarian, womb and vulva cancer.

Doctors hope to raise self-awareness and encourage people to examine themselves for signs of the disease.

Although screening is available to try to prevent cervical cancer, there is not yet screening for other types of gynaecological cancers.

This means that the earlier a cancer is found, the higher likelihood there will be of successful treatment.

Hospitals across the North West will be holding awareness events and an information stand will be in the Trafford Centre all week.

The organisers of the awareness week hope to make it a national event next year.
