Former Mancunian Olympian has helped organise the event |
The UK's biggest youth sporting event began in Greater Manchester on Saturday. About 3,000 athletes were taking part in the two-day Greater Manchester Youth Games in Horwich, near Bolton.
The games are not solely intended for young elite athletes but aim to give opportunities to young people, both able bodied and disabled, to compete at a high profile event.
In the past, they have helped many young future sportsmen and women, such as Manchester United and England footballers Phil and Gary Neville.
The event is being held at Bolton Arena, St Joseph's School and Horwich Leisure Centre.
'Fantastic event'
It has been partly organised by Olympic athlete and former Commonwealth Games champion Diane Modahl.
She told competitors: "Make sure you enjoy the youth games.
"They'll go really fast but you will have long-lasting, personal memories of a fantastic event that will last a lifetime."
Julie Thompson, Bolton Council's play and children's services manager, said: "The sporting hopes, dreams and aspirations of the region's young people will be realised at the games and inspire civic pride and a sense of community throughout Greater Manchester."
Alongside the sporting events, an arts and cultural festival is also taking place at all three venues including drama, dance and other entertainment.
