Councillor Howard Sykes, leader of the Liberal Democrats at the authority, said nothing is being done to deal with problems in Yorkshire Street.

Taxi drivers have said the area can be "horrendous" and "out of control" at the weekends.

Mr Sykes said nothing has been done to deal with the issue, despite the fact Oldham's executive committee pledged to take action in 2001.

But Oldham Council says active steps to make the area safer are being taken.

Greater Manchester Police has highlighted concern about violence and disorder in the area.

Issues that have been considered include a ban on alcohol on the street and closing it to traffic at weekends.
