London Green Party's record candidates for election

The Green Party has launched its London council election manifesto with a record number of candidates.

The party, which has more than 800 candidates hoping to become London councillors, launched its manifesto on the city's Millennium Bridge.

It has 13 elected councillors in London wards and insisted it was not just about the environment.

It unveiled its 11-point plan covering policies on areas such as health, community and social justice.

The London council elections are scheduled to be held on 6 May.

'Highly effective'

Councillor Romayne Phoenix, one of three Green councillors representing Brockley ward, said: "The three bigger parties seem more similar in their policies and they're all calling for cuts."

"The Green Party want to challenge that outlook for the future. We want to invest in jobs and homes and public transport."

Islington's first Green councillor, councillor Katie Dawson, added: "In councils where Greens have been elected, those Green councillors have been seen to be highly effective, punching well above their weight despite not having the backing enjoyed by councillors from the bigger parties.

"This is because we have the courage of our convictions and are passionate about the things we believe in."

The Conservatives said their party also puts the environment at the heart of its agenda.

"What is really important at this election is that we get a government that has a coherent plan to tackle climate change and protect our environment," a spokesman said.

"The Green Party can't deliver that - you can only get a green agenda by voting Conservative."
