London poised for heavy snowfall

Transport for London (TfL) has said it has "well prepared cold weather plans" which it is putting into place following warnings of heavy snowfall.

The Met office has warned of heavy snow falling over large parts of London overnight on Tuesday and into Wednesday morning.

TfL said it was "working to keep the roads and pavements clear".

Meanwhile, London Mayor Boris Johnson said: "We will do our level best to keep London moving."

'Gritters poised'

A TfL spokesman said work "includes ensuring access roads and key roads are gritted so that buses can get out on the network".

"Our fleet of 38 gritters will be operating across the Transport for London Road Network," he said.

"This includes ensuring access roads and key roads are gritted so that buses can get out on the network.

"De-icing trains will run across the Tube network overnight," he added.

Mr Johnson said: "We are vigilantly scanning the heavens for the first snowflake and our gritters are poised to grit the roads."

In February 2009, London buses were taken off the roads following heavy snowfall.

Following this, MPs accused Mr Johnson of "shamefully" allowing the city to be "shut down so easily".
