Man jailed over Baby P to appeal

Baby P died after months of abuse despite being monitored by officials

The boyfriend of Baby P's mother is to appeal against the convictions for the role he played in the boy's death and the rape of a two-year-old girl.

The man, aged 32, was jailed last month for life with a minimum term of 10 years for the rape.

He was also given a 12-year sentence to for his role in Peter's death in Haringey, north London, in 2007.

The attorney general has confirmed the sentences, which she said were lenient, will not be referred for appeal.

Peter's 27-year-old mother was given an indefinite sentence with a minimum term of five years at the Old Bailey last month after pleading guilty to causing or allowing her son's death.

Unduly lenient

Her lodger, Jason Owen, 37, of Bromley, south-east London, received an indefinite sentence with a minimum term of three years for failing to take steps to save the little boy.

The Attorney General Baroness Scotland was last month considering referring the jail terms to the Court of Appeal on the grounds they were "unduly lenient" .

But she later concluded there was "no realistic prospect" of the Court of Appeal increasing their sentences.

The Old Bailey trial heard Baby Peter had suffered a broken back and fractured ribs among other injuries during months of abuse, despite being on the north London authority's child protection register.

Lawyers representing the 32-year-old appellant have now lodged papers appealing against both convictions and both sentences with the Court of Appeal.
