Winehouse sang at the fundraising End of Summer Ball

Singer Amy Winehouse has been charged with assault after claims that she hit a fan at a charity ball last September.

Ms Winehouse attended a police station on Thursday morning. She was questioned and charged with common assault.

The 25-year-old singer allegedly hit a fan at the End of Summer Ball in Berkeley Square, central London, on 26 September last year.

Ms Winehouse is due to attend City of Westminster Magistrates' Court on 17 March, police confirmed.

Charity event

A spokesman for the singer said: "Amy voluntarily attended a police station in London yesterday morning.

"She was questioned by appointment in relation to an accusation made after the Berkeley ball last year."

Ms Winehouse sang at the End of Summer Ball, a �700-a-ticket fundraising event in aid of the Prince's Trust charity.

The singer recently moved from Camden, north London, to Hadley Wood in Enfield, north London.

She won five Grammy awards for her 2006 album Back to Black.

In January, her husband Blake Fielder-Civil began divorce proceedings against her.
