Westminster cuts parking cameras

The cuts are intended to reassure motorists

The use of CCTV cameras to combat illegal parking in central London has been cut by more than 30%, Westminster City Council has revealed.

The number of cameras used by the council has gone down from 145 to 100.

A further 30 have been relocated to traffic "hot-spots" where there are issues with congestion.

Councillor Danny Chalkley said he recognised "public concern" over the use of cameras and added that the changes should "reassure motorists".

All camera locations are listed on the council's website and each camera is identified with a "street enforcement camera" sign.

Extra camera signs will be installed at the entrances to controlled parking zones.

Mr Chalkley, Westminster City Council's cabinet member for environment and transport, said the use of CCTV remained an "essential component" of parking enforcement.
