New railway station set to open

The shopping centre will add 70,000 commuters a week

A new railway station near a shopping centre still under construction, is to open later this month.

Shepherds Bush overground station will open on 28 September and provide a new stop between Willesden Junction and Kensington Olympia, west London.

The north-south West London Line and trains between East Croydon and Milton Keynes will stop at the station.

The station will open a month before Westfield Shopping Centre which could generate up to 70,000 commuters a week.

New stations

Councillor Harry Phibbs, Hammersmith and Fulham Council's assistant cabinet member for environment, said: "The new overground station will play a major part in improving the transport links for shoppers and local residents around Shepherds Bush."

Ian Brown, managing director of Transport for London said: "This station will serve as a vital link between west London and the 19 other boroughs in which London overground operates."

Westfield Development, which is building the shopping centre, built the new station. The opening of the station was delayed by months after safety experts found the platform needed to be 18 inches wider.

Director of Westfield Development, Iain Johnstone, said: "We have invested �170 million in improving public transport... to ensure the area has excellent and comprehensive public transport links."

The station will have step-free access to platforms and lifts.

In October the refurbished Shepherds Bush Tube station will reopen on the Central Line and a new Wood Lane station will open on the Hammersmith and City Line.

In 2010 the West London Line will get another new stop - Imperial Wharf station.
