Freewheel event gears up for '08

Mayor Boris Johnson has urged Londoners to try cycling in the city

London's annual day dedicated to celebrating cycling in the capital is hoping to attract 45,000 people.

The Freewheel event on 21 September aims to promote cycling by closing several parts of the city to motorised traffic for the day.

This year, a new route for riders through London will include Trafalgar Square, the Monument, the Tower of London and Admiralty Arch.

The event has the endorsement of keen cyclist Mayor Boris Johnson.

Carnival atmosphere

Mr Johnson said the traffic-free day was a great chance for Londoners to get back on their bikes.

"There are so many reasons to dust off your bike this summer - it's a great way to get fit, it saves you money, and it's good for the environment."

Last year - the event's first - drew 38,000 cyclists onto the city's streets.

This year organisers have added a large rest area in St James's Park where participants can take in some of London's best views.

The event offers a variety of shorter routes into the city for young or new cyclists to try out.

The day includes entertainment, and organisers say there will be a carnival atmosphere.
