The girls have pleaded not guilty to the charges

The trial of Yasemin Vatansever and Yatunde Diya, both 16 and from north London, was adjourned until Wednesday.

The defence is expected to present witnesses at the closed hearing in the Ghanaian capital Accra, according to a Ghana Narcotics Control Board official.

The teenagers were arrested on 2 July trying to board a plane to the UK.

Prosecution witnesses began giving testimonies last week.

The two teenagers deny possessing and attempting to smuggle more than 6kg (13lb) of cocaine valued at �300,000.

After the hearing Sabine Zanker, of Fair Trials Abroad, said that the two girls were doing "fine".

"They are being well looked after and their families are pleased with the attention they are receiving under the circumstances," he said.

The girls, who are both students, pleaded not guilty to the charges when they appeared at a youth court in court in Ghana on 27 July.

They say they were not aware of drugs in their luggage and had been tricked into carrying them.

The girls are being tried at a youth court under Ghana's Juvenile Justice Act which indicates their trial must be completed within six months and they can only be held on remand for three months.
