Baby deaths rise in north London
Baby
Better maternity data is needed to tackle the issue says the report
Babies born in deprived households in parts of north London are more likely to die before their first birthday, new research has revealed.

Infant mortality rates in Harrow and Haringey were higher than 7 per 1,000 live births between 2003-5, according to the London Health Observatory (LHO).

Better maternity care services targeting these areas would save 41 babies each year, the report said.

Historically, the highest infant mortality rates were in east London.

LHO Director Dr Bobbie Jacobson said: "We must ensure that all women, particularly those from at-risk minority groups, benefit from early access to maternity care."

The report says better maternity data is needed from hospital trusts to track progress on the issue.
