Heathrow airport has been voted the second best international airport to be "stuck in".

The accolade for the west London airport comes from American travel agents who placed Heathrow behind Amsterdam's Schipol in a survey.

Those polled described Heathrow as "a shopper's dream", while Schipol was praised for its wedding chapel, casino and "snooze" chairs.

Third was Frankfurt in Germany followed by Changi in Singapore.

Fifth was Paris's Charles de Gaulle with Hong Kong in sixth place.

"It used to be that passengers who found themselves with a little bit extra time at the airport could only hope the book they brought would last through their delay," said American Society of Travel Agents president Cheryl Corey Hudak.

She added: "Nowadays, some airports are offering as many diversions and activities as a trip to the mall or local museum."
