Strike by Tube cleaners averted

ISS maintains the Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly lines
A strike threatened by hundreds of London Underground cleaners has been averted.

Transport and General Workers' Union (TGWU) members who work for Tube Lines had warned of industrial action over 204 planned redundancies.

The TGWU said it had agreed a deal with Tube Line's contractor, ISS, which meant "no cleaner will be forced out of their job".

ISS said it was "delighted" that agreement had been reached.

The company is responsible for cleaning and maintaining the Jubilee, Northern and Piccadilly lines.

Tom Chinnery for the TGWU, said: "This will reassure our members who were facing the sack in just a few weeks' time.

"Their determination to resist these cuts will be to the benefit of their colleagues and tube passengers alike.

"We need to continue to work towards a better solution to cleaning standards on the Tube... we intend to press for minimum cleaning standards for all companies to abide by," he added.

The TGWU had begun balloting members for strike action on Tuesday.
