The RAC says thousands flout the law every day
Police in London are giving advance warning that anyone caught using a hand-held mobile phone while driving faces tougher penalties.

Officers have been handing out leaflets informing motorists that from Tuesday they could be given three penalty points and fined 60 if caught.

A ban on using hand-held mobile phones while driving came into force in 2003.

The Metropolitan Police issued 14,000 fines during 2004/05 financial year. This rose by 5,000 the next year.

According to the RAC, 74,000 people in the UK were prosecuted for using their mobile phone while driving in 2004.

This figure rose to 250,000 the following year.

The motoring organisation also claimed 500,000 people flout the law daily in the UK.
