The CCTV cars will focus on traffic hotspots

Westminster has deployed two of the modified Smart cars to enforce traffic and parking restrictions.

They will focus principally on dangerous parking near schools and illegal parking at busy junctions.

Councillor Danny Chalkley said the cars would assist the council's network of fixed cameras and parking attendants.

Safety concerns

"We are introducing this new measure to improve traffic hotspots which have been highlighted as having safety concerns," he said.

"For instance, we have had a number of complaints of illegal parking around schools which is potentially very dangerous."

"Once compliance has been achieved in one area, the CCTV cars can move on to another traffic hotspot."

Warning notices, including photographic evidence, will be sent out for the first two weeks of the scheme. After that, penalty notices will be issued.
