The sports star was welcomed ecstatically |
US basketball legend Michael Jordan has inaugurated a basketball court at a school in south-east London. Jordan dedicated the refurbished court in front of around 100 awe-struck pupils at the Lillian Bayliss School.
The 100,000 community project, partly funded by Sports England, includes the creation of a new post to promote the game in the local area.
Jordan, who played for the Chicago Bulls, is on a European tour to promote the US professional game.
He told BBC News:"One of the things you've got to do is to give the kids an opportunity to be able to make their choice for themselves and to say they would never be able to do that is not fair.
"We give them this environment and practice and work on the game and anything is possible."
Funding was provided by sportswear firm Nike and Sports England's Sport Action Zone project, which targets hard-to-reach young people in some of the most deprived parts of the country.
