Bin lorries get art on the move
Refuse collection
The council hopes the scheme will mean thousands will see the art
Most artists dream of their work hanging in galleries, but eight south Londoners will soon see theirs appear across the side of a bin lorry.

Eight Southwark dustcarts are to be spruced up with local artists' masterpieces, giving their work maximum exposure on the streets.

The scheme aims to promote local art while making waste collection a more attractive process, says the council.

Printmaker Gabriela Szulman said: "I'm not precious about where my art goes."

Pairing waste collection with art is an innovative way of getting it into the public domain
Councillor Columba Blango

"This is a great project because the art is getting seen by so many more people than if it was hung in a gallery," said Ms Szulman, whose work will appear on a truck on the Dulwich round.

"The most important thing is that people are able to enjoy it."

The first truck is to be unveiled on Friday, and by the end of the year there are expected to be eight in circulation.

Councillor Columba Blango said: "Pairing waste collection with art is an innovative way of getting it into the public domain and will ensure that it's seen by many thousands of people around the borough."
