Bid to protect threatened species
Stag beetle
The stag beetle is under threat due to the destruction of dead wood
Londoners are being asked to help protect threatened species with the launch of a wildlife campaign.

The London Wildlife Trust warns that species such as the stag beetle are under threat, and is asking Londoners to attract wildlife to their gardens.

"Wild Up Your Street" is being launched at the Tate Modern by TV presenter and keen wildlife gardener Linda Barker.

According to a report issued by the trust, eight in 10 Londoners want more wildlife in their gardens.

'Positive impact'

Linda Barker said: "London's wildlife is amazing but it needs our help.

"Urban wildlife gardening is fun and easy and has a positive impact on you and your community."

The trust found that Londoners' favourite wildlife were the blackbird and the stag beetle, which is in decline across the UK because of the destruction of dead wood.

Londoners can protect the stag beetle by creating a suitable log pile in their gardens.

Carlo Laurenzi, from the London Wildlife Trust, said: "We urgently need an up-to-date estimate of the numbers of stag beetles in London to understand where stag beetles are flourishing and where they are doing less well.

"With this information, we can help improve habitats across London and help protect the fascinating creature for the future."
