Pupils will find more fruit and vegetables on the menu |
Pupils in Camden will be eating healthier meals next year when a 1m package of measures to improve nutritional standards is introduced. Camden Council in north London has voted to increase spending on school meals from 45p per head to 70p.
More organic food, fruit and vegetables and less fat, sugar and salt will be on the menu from next April when the existing supplier's contract runs out.
Kitchen facilities will be improved so more in-house meals can be provided.
The new four-year contract will also include a more rigorous monitoring regime based on the higher nutritional standards.
Academic achievement
More than 42 head teachers, 360 parents and 525 pupils took part in a review of school meals and backed the proposals.
Camden Council's Cllr Theo Blackwell said: "We have listened to the views of heads, parents and pupils and we are giving them the kind of radically improved service they want.
"We want pupils to get the kind of healthy, nutritious and tasty meals that are vital for promoting health, academic achievement and behaviour in the classroom.
"These proposals are the best way of delivering that."
An interim package will be introduced from September when all schools will have new upgraded menus.
