Lord Nelson was killed in 1805 in the Battle of Trafalgar |
Nelson's statue which sits on a 185ft (56m) column in Trafalgar Square is to be given a 380,000 facelift, the London Assembly has said. The renovation work will coincide with the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar in which naval hero Vice Admiral Lord Nelson lost his life.
A recent inspection of the 165-year-old statue revealed scars to the face and hairline cracks in the stone.
The work is not expected to be finished in time for October's celebrations.
David Quarmby, chairman of SeaBritain 2005 which is organising the anniversary events, said: "It would be a good thing to clean up Nelson's column and make him look as good as many of the other buildings in Trafalgar Square."
A spokesman for the Mayor of London said the cost was an estimate and talks were taking place with possible sponsors.
The centrepiece of the celebrations will be an International Fleet Review at Portsmouth, Hants, on 28 June to be attended by the Queen, as well as 250,000 people and 10,000 spectator yachts.
