The interior of the Tube carriage has been adapted for its new use

Radio Lollipop, based at London's Great Ormond Street Hospital, will use the Jubilee line carriage to broadcast to the young patients.

Its remaining space will be used as an activity centre away from the wards.

London Underground's Barry Wilkinson said using the redundant Tube carriage as a broadcast base was the most original idea he had come across.

'Interior stripped out'

"After travelling millions of miles on the Jubilee line the carriage was due for retirement but it's good to know that it will have a new lease of life," he said.

The carriage has been completely refurbished for the scheme and has even been reduced in length.

Penny Howard, a nursing sister at Great Ormond Street said: "The Tube carriage will be a great treat for the patients.

"Not only will the children be able to have fun and relax in the carriage but it will allow them a break from hospital life."
