A man was hacked to death after his girlfriend's family found out about their relationship, a court was told. Ahmed Bashir, 21, was attacked 40 times with a sword and 10in knife in his garden in 1996, the Old Bailey heard.
Defendants Waseem Afsar, 32, and Nisar Khan, 31, both of Slough, Berkshire, deny murder.
Mr Bashir, from Hounslow, west London, was dating Mr Afsar's sister Nighat, which was "wholly unacceptable" to the family, the prosecution said.
He died after receiving 40 "significant and severe" stab wounds, mainly to his groin, said Brian Altman, prosecuting.
Mr Bashir's friend Abdul Ebrahimkhail, 24, was also wounded when he tried to intervene.
Mr Altman said: "They were brutally and savagely attacked in a residential area.
"They were seen to be holding what one horrified on-looker describes as swords which they used to hack Mr Bashir."
Mr Afsar had allegedly forced his sister to reveal the affair, put pressure on her to go to Pakistan where she had earlier been forced into an arranged marriage - and then threatened to kill her.
Mr Altman said: "He warned her that he was going to find Mr Bashir and cut his legs off so he could never walk again."
Sought sanctuary
The following evening, Mr Bashir was greeted with the calls of "kill him" as he returned home.
Mr Altman said: "These men attacked Mr Bashir in the roadway. He managed to crawl away from them into a front garden where he was attacked brutally."
They were arrested two months later after "seeking sanctuary" in a mosque in Norwich.
